WHEN it comes to giving local businesses the best start possible, the scope of the North Queensland Small Business Development Centre (NQSBDC) extends far beyond the immediate Townsville area.

While the ill effects from Cyclone Yasi are slowly starting to fade in Cardwell, a business that opened just weeks after last year’s disaster is quickly stamping a lasting impression on the town after initially seeking business support from the NQSBDC.

After months of preparing to open a sweet shop, local couple Geoff Patch and his wife Jess were all set to start trading the weekend of February 5, when disaster hit the Wednesday night before.

“We had the whole shop stocked, the signs were up and we were ready to go,” Jess said. “But then we lost everything in the cyclone, plus the flooding that followed delayed us even more because none of our stock could get through.”

The sweet shop-to-be wasn’t the only business affected, with the local bakery wiped out and the owners leaving town soon after. With no bakery, Cardwell locals begged Geoff – who is also a baker and pastry chef – and Jess to satisfy the town’s hunger for freshly-baked bread and cakes, fresh sandwiches, ice-cream and gourmet coffee.

Not ones to be knocked down or miss an opportunity, the young couple modified their vision and got back to work; and are glad they did. The Victoria Street-business is now bustling and – while strongly supported by the locals and travelling tradies – there are people willing to go out of their way for Sweet Surprise’s vanilla slice.

“There are people who drive from Ingham and Innisfail just to get the vanilla slice,” Jess said. “Starting the bakery was one of the best choices we’ve made – everyone loves and needs bread!”

Jess and Geoff are especially grateful for the assistance provided by the North Queensland Small Business Development Centre (NQSBDC), especially in the early days when they were just finding their feet.

Based in Condon (Townsville), the NQSBDC is a small business incubator that offers discounted office and workshop space, but also provides a whole raft of free advice for businesses just starting out or wishing to grow; including accounting, marketing, legal and financial tips.

“Chris (Cottrell from the NQSBDC) spent a lot of time with me and gave me all the information I needed to start the business,” Jess said. “I went to Townsville once, but then the rest was done over the phone. We’re still in contact now and I give them a call if I’m ever stuck or need anything and Chris pops in when he’s passing.

“Cardwell is such a small town and I’ve been telling everyone to talk to them if they need help to grow their business.”

The NQSBDC is still offering specific support to businesses affected by Cyclone Yasi. ““Whether it’s building database or helping to set-up Quickbooks or MYOB, we have a wide variety of skills at the centre and we’re only too happy to help,” chief executive officer Brian Arnold said.
