Help for businesses still suffering from Yasi

North Queensland small businesses struggling in the wake of Cyclone Yasi and its associated flooding will be able to access personalised business advice to help them move forward financially and plan for the future.

The North Queensland Small Business Development Centre (NQSBDC) was successful in applying for a $100,000 grant, which is part of the Australian Government’s $2.5 million National Disaster Assistance program to help small businesses all over the country affected by natural disasters since October 2010.

NQSBDC chief executive officer Brian Arnold said the centre was locating officers in the Ingham/Cardwell area on a regular basis over the next six months to assist small business adversely affected by February’s cyclone to move back to profitability.

“We have assembled a team of experts to help struggling businesses with everything from planning, finance, marketing, legal and accounting matters, government regulation and referrals,” Mr Arnold said.

“We have a highly-qualified senior IT expert to assist with residual IT issues; a CPA accountant to help with budgets, financial forecasts business plans and other documents for approaching banks, landlords and creditors; and a professional marketing person who will assist in the development of a detailed marketing plan.

“The centre is looking forward to equipping these businesses with the skills and advice they need to get back on track.”

Mr Arnold said if advice was needed beyond the NQSBDC’s expertise, the centre could assist with paying the fees of the required professional.

Assistance will be provided in one-on-one consultations, through workshops with small groups and by phone if an instant response is required.

To qualify businesses need a current ABN number and be based in the Townsville, Ingham, Cardwell, Ayr or Charters Towers regions. For more information contact the NQSBDC in Condon directly on (07) 4723 8491 or visit www.nqsmallbusiness.com.
